Electronic Music Songs & Albums

Sections

I'm limiting what appears here to the good stuff. There's too much bad music to bother talking about it.

Albums

My usual definition of a good album is if it has at least four good songs, it's a good album. Finding a good electronic music album is like finding a good 80's album; meaning it almost never happens.

Westbam "We'll Never Stop Living This Way" (electro) - The music on this album could be used to define the genre. The songs have a certain 80's breakdance retro sound, but they don't sound campy.

Fatboy Slim "You've Come A Long Way Baby" (nu skool breaks) - This album has 11 tracks and I like 8 of them. Some of the songs are quirky, or hard, or electro, but they're all fun.

Mix Albums

I have a tendency to dislike most mix albums since they seem to lack the fun and spark of a live show so don't expect to see too many albums in this section. (I have noticed that there are a lot more albums here than in the Albums section. Maybe it's due to the fact that there are very few djs proficient enough to put out an entire album of their own work, but mixing other people's work makes for an easy pay check.)

Fatboy Slim "Live on Brighton Beach" (break beat and so much more) - This has to be one of the best mix albums I've ever heard. It captures the Fatboy Slim set at his free show on Brighton Beach. There are parts of the set that are just amazing. I can completely visualize being one of the crowd that night; hearing the intro for Underworld's "Born Slippy" and then the shock of the trademark Fatboy Slim "Right Here, Right Now" sample playing over it and just knowing the night was going to be a special one. It's what I've felt every time I've seen Fatboy Slim play, and I never thought it could be captured on cd, but it has. (I read in the liner notes that there was a fireworks display during one of the songs, and I can visualize that too. Hearing Santos's "3-2-1 Fire!" and the vocal from Fatboy's own "Song for Shelter" about how the music gets him high, and right at the peak seeing the fireworks go off.) I find the end of the set amazing too. I could see how you'd come off of "Phat Planet" with the "Bird of Prey" sample playing over it and hearing that "Song for Shelter" vocal and just feel absolutely high for having been there. ("...so for all you hip-hoppers, you do-whoppers, name-droppers, you pill-poppers... come into our house... to get deep.")

This cd definitely wins my award for "The best set to listen to on a beach."

Dieselboy "ProjectHUMAN" (jungle) - There are some strange songs on this cd, but the latter half of the cd is just bad ass! It makes for great driving music.

Technical Itch "Killabites Vol. 2" (jungle) - Dark and evil, this is a good aggressive 2 cd set.

Adam Freeland "On Tour" (break beat) - Liberal use of good songs with samples and good track selection make this a pretty cool album. The only part of the album I didn't like was when he went from the very slow and spacy Ils 6 "Space" track to the frantic riff sampling Bushwacka "Monster". To me it sounds like he trying to include his favorite Bushwacka song in the mix and just threw it in. Other than that, I thought it was a very fine album and pretty representative of what you'll hear at a Adam Freeland show these days. Oh yeah, don't expect it to be very fast. It's a mellow sort of break beat.

John Graham "Transport 5" (progressive house) - The tracks on here sound much better than your average prog house cd. These ones don't actually all sound alike although the cd could use more vocals to break up some of the monotony.

Koma & Bones "Nu Horizons Vol. 2" (nu skool breaks) - One of the best mix albums ever! There are so many good songs on this album and they are used to great affect. I've had the album for a while, and I still listen to it. (If you knew my music attention span you would know how amazing this is.)

This cd is definitely wins my award for "The best set to listen to if I were in a field with green lasers overhead."

General Midi "Genetically Modified" (nu skool breaks) - It doesn't have songs I love like the Nu Horizons cd, but it's a great example of combining above average songs into a very good set.

Fatboy Slim "On The Floor At The Boutique" (big beat) - It's the closest you'll ever come to the live madness of a Fatboy Slim show. While it may have been recorded live it still lacks some of the magic that makes his shows so much fun.

Mauro Picatto "Nukleuz Presents Mauro Picatto: The Lizard Man Cometh" (hard house) - The second cd in this mix is big room hard house with a trance feel. Listening to this album makes me want to just tune everything else out and move to the beat. Oh wait, that's what I did the first time I heard it.

Steve Lawler "Dark Drums Vol. 2" (tribal house) - Like all tribal it can get a little repetitive at times and be a little slow, but it's a very danceable album.

Mickey Finn "Jungle Warfare" (jungle) - When I think of jungle, this is the album I think of.

Singles (discontinued)

This section has been discontinued since I never really had time to do this to begin with.

Breakbeat

Chemical Brothers "Galaxy Bounce" (big beat) - A speedy guitar riff, the usual chemical noise, and some good vocal samples makes this a fast little groover. Goes like: "There it is. Aww.. yeah."

Da Hool "Meet Her At The Love Parade" (electro) - A classic anthem.

Motion Unit "My Mind" (electro) - I never know how to explain a good electro song, so I'll just say it's good.

Dj Icey "Bust Off The Bass (feat. Marlon)" (Florida breaks) - Good and grindy with a ragga vocal. It makes you want to get down old school. Goes like: "You know we come bad. Bust off the bass mon."

Uberzone "Rhythm Device" (Florida breaks) - Electro and bangin', this reminds me a lot of Dj Icey's sound. This one is a little dark too. Highly recommended. If you can hear it on a system with the good bass, you may just fall in love with the song. Goes like: "Wuah hah hah haaa!" [maniacal laugh].
[I believe this song appeared on "Astralwerks Sampler 2001 Vol. 1" as "Science Fiction", but it appears on Uberzone's album "Faith in the Future" as "Rhythm Device". Weird.]

S. I. Futures "Freestyle Disco" (nu skool breaks) - This one has one of those wobbly basslines that I tend to dig so much. It's pretty cool, with a vocal of someone who sounds like a dance instructor, then around the last minute the song explodes. Goes like: "Free style disco dancing."

Atomic Hooligan "In It Together" (nu skool breaks) - It starts off a little mellow, then the bass gets really grindy. It would fit into a mellow set nicely. Goes like: "Are we in this thing alone or are we in it together?"

Rennie Pilgrem vs. Dub Species "The Sermon" (nu skool breaks) - Bad ass! Fast tribal breaks with a catchy hook. Goes like: "Feel my motherfuckin' bass in your face."

Apex "Symmetry (Nu Breed mix)" (nu skool breaks) - A little mellow and spacy. Works well in the right kind of mix.

PMT "Gyromancer (False Prophet mix)" (nu skool breaks) - Spacy and trancy, it's the song I'd most like to be listening to while standing in a open field at night with green lasers overhead.

PMT "Deeper Water (Koma & Bones remix)" (nu skool breaks) - This is the song I'd like to hear after Gyromancer. Still spacy and trancy, but with vocals to go with it.

Rennie Pilgrem & B.L.I.M. "Eskimo (Yellow Snow mix)" (nu skool breaks) - Great song with squiggly noises.

Andy Jarrod "The Fourth K (Koma & Bones remix)" (nu skool breaks) - So breaky it almost hurts. But in a good way.

Subgod "Velodrome TV (General Midi mix)" (nu skool breaks) - The vocals are taken from a nonelectronic song and the it sounds like a newer style of old school electro.

Makesome Breaksome "Pig Chase" (nu skool breaks) - Goes like: "Put my love to work."

Garage

Groove Armada "Superstylin'" (speed) - Amazing song. It's got a ragga vocal and a rolling bassline that just makes you want to get up and dance. Goes like: "Super stylin'."

House

Par T One "I'm So Crazy" - Is it house or is it hip hop? I don't know, but it's bad ass. Goes like: "Shut up! Just keep walking!"

Basement Jaxx "Where's Your Head At?" - Extremely noisy and fun, this is the sort of stuff you want to hear at peak time. Goes like: "Where's Your Head At?"

Cosmo "Busted" (Chicago) - Funky as hell. Goes like: "Yo. Yo. Bust that ass."

Angel Alanis "Ghetto Blaster" (Chicago) - This song doesn't do much, but it's fast, funky, and has major party potential.

Green Velvet "La La Land" (Chicago) - A minimal house song with some interesting vocals. It's not for everyone, but it seems to grow on people after a couple of beers. Goes like: "I'm going down to, La La Land."

Street Preacherz "Ill Concept (Antoine Clamaran mix)" (Chicago) - Sounds like Jose Nunez's "The Harmonizer" or Aphrohead's "Cry Baby", but it's progressive and better than both. Goes like: Dooo dooo dodo do dooo.

Antoine Clamaran "Experience (club mix)" (Chicago) - Fast and nice. Sounds like what you would play right before "Chi's Revenge (Angel's mix)".

Angel Alanis "Chi's Revenge (Angel's mix)" (Chicago) - Fast with breaks. Definite party music.

Soul Grabber (Paul Jacobs) "Soul Grabber Part 3" (Chicago) - It's bouncy and hard to resist. He should have named it "Ass Grabber."

Mutiny "Blowin' Like Da Wind" (Chicago) - It's a little funky so it's probable not everyone's cup of tea.

Buffalo Bunch "T.I.T.T.S." (disco) - It's got a cool guitar riff and a mellow little vocal sample. It's got a cool sound that seems more like late Saturday night than early Sunday morning. Goes like: "Ahh huhhh."

Angel Alanis "Can't Get It" (disco) - A little harder and a little more repetitive than your average disco house song, this one could fit into all sorts of sets. It's not great, but I swear I've probably danced to this before.

Johnny Corporate "Sunday Shoutin'" (disco) - Disco and a little funky, it's got a cool hornline throughout the song and it's uplifting stuff.

Mauro Picotto "Bangkok" (tech) - Hard and repetitive, it's pure peak hour shit. Not an anthem, but it will definitely have people throwing themselves around the dance floor.

Shaktiman "Wandering Sound" (tech) - Very slow, but cool sounding.

Vigi & Flip "Freak Frequency" (tech) - The dancability of house mixed with breakbeat elements and some good vocal samples.

Moloko "Indigo (Robbie Rivera's dark mix)" (tribal) - Yep, it's dark. It sounds kind of menacing and makes me want to look over my shoulder all the time. It would be cool in the right set. Goes like: "Dig me out?"

Frankie Carbone "Everybody (Luca Ricci's deep tribal dub)" (tribal) - Very deep rolling bass, and nice highs. Goes like: "Shaked up."

Phats & Small "Respect the Cock" (tribal) - A mellow number, with squiggles and samples from Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia. It'll never be mistaken for Phats & Small and it's not for the faint of heart. Goes like: "Respect the cock."

DCM "Elemental (Dirty Minx vocal)" (tribal) - A little mellow, but nice with a unique sound throughout the song. Goes like: "It's elemental." The dub version is the same, only without the vocal.

Organized Noize "I Am the Drum" (tribal) - Tribal and totally big room; I love it when the voice says "...As the drums begin to sound. I am the drum."

Peter "Tha Zouk" Anthony & Bruno Marciano "The First Tribal Feeling (Paul Jay's remix)" (tribal) - It starts out tribal than goes a little breaky. Nice.

Jungle/Drum and Bass

Roni Size/Reprazent "New Forms (Roni Size remix)" - This song sounds like the E-Z Rollers with large drums that sound more orchestral than artificial and a song that would fit into a score for some spy movie. Good stuff.

Q Project "Champion Sound (Alliance remix)" (darkstep) - This song has been remixed about 50 times, but this remix is my favorite. It starts out normal enough, then the dark synths kick in and it really starts rolling. Goes like: "Champion sounds ????????. Champion sound."

Pugwash "The Edge (Dj Hazard remix)" (darkstep) - Generally evil sound + hard bass = good stuff.

DJ Krust "Warhead 2000" (darkstep) - A worthy sequel to a kick ass song. Dark and distorted, but with the same "roller" feel as the original.

Roni Size/Reprazent "Brown Paper Bag (Photek remix)" (jazzstep) - It's jazzy, atmospheric, and damn good.

Ram Trilogy "Incarnate" (roller) - The song practically growls at you. That combined with various spooky sounds make this nicely dark.

Vinyl Syndicate "Man of Steal" (roller) - Once you get past the cheesy Superman score the song gets on pretty well. It rolls, it grinds, it doesn't really go anywhere, but it's still fun.

Shimon & Andy C "Body Rock" (roller) - If you've heard any jungle sets in the last two months you've probably heard this song. It's huge, and for good reason. It kicks ass.

DJ Krust "Warhead (Steppa mix)" (roller) - One listen to this and you'll understand why this style is called "roller".
