Past Travels

This section is about my trips outside of Arizona. All of my intrastate trips are either located on the homepage under Recent News or in the Updates Archive.

Houston, TX - 5/08 - It wasn't a good idea to take a six month pregnant Lynn to Japan so we spent some time in cities we visited the year before. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Chicago, IL - 5/08 - It wasn't a good idea to take a six month pregnant Lynn to Japan so we spent some time in cities we visited the year before. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Los Angeles, CA - 1/08 - I'd been to Los Angeles a few times before, but felt indifferent about the place. Once I found restaurants I wanted to eat at it was another story. I need to work on the text for this trip.

New Orleans, LA - 12/07 - After an agonizingly long four year hiatus we finally made it back to New Orleans. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Chicago, IL - 9/07 - Lynn took me to Chicago for my birthday. It was the first time either of us had been there and a great experience. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Houston, TX - 5/07 - Lynn wanted to visit her best friend Julie in Houston for Julie's birthday so that's what we did. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Las Vegas, NV - 12/06 - We took this trip because we could. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Osaka, Japan - 05/06 - I visited Steve in Osaka again and visited Kyoto a few times too. I didn't eat as well this trip, but I had more fun.

Massillon, OH - 12/05 - Lynn and I were in Massillon visiting her parents for the holidays. This might be useful if you're going to be around that area of Ohio and if I ever finish the text for this trip.

Las Vegas, NV - 11/05 - This trip to Vegas was by myself. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Seattle, WA - 09/05 - Our first trip ever to Seattle was for my birthday. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Las Vegas, NV - 05/05 - This was our first trip to Vegas in a couple of years. It sort of played out as a "best of Vegas restaurants" from our previous visits. I need to work on the text for this trip.

California Road Trip (Sonoma and Napa) - 05/05 - Driving to the Coachella music festival in Indio prompted me to expand it into a road trip to Sonoma and Napa.

Monterey, CA - 11/04 - Lynn and I spent our first anniversary in Monterey enjoying the Great Wine Escape. I need to work on the text for this trip.

Europe (France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany) - 04/04 - It was quite an interesting trip. We had a couple of different travel nightmares. I still have about two thirds of the pictures to finish.

San Francisco/Napa Valley, CA - 12/03 - This was the second half of our honeymoon. San Francisco was a nice place to eat, but I don't know if I'll be visiting there again. Napa I loved. I'm currently working on the text for this trip.

New Orleans, LA - 12/03 - This was part one of our honeymoon. Too many restaurants and not enough time pretty much describes this trip. I need to work on the pictures for this trip.

Osaka, Japan - 04/03 - This was my first trip to Japan and it was interesting. And cold, very cold.

Las Vegas, NV - 03/03 - An overnight trip to Vegas.

New Orleans, LA - 12/02 - New Orleans trip number six which included a tasting menu experience like I've never had before.

Thanksgiving - 11/02 - Lynn and I went to spend Thanksgiving with her parents in Willingboro, New Jersey. We also traveled to Philadelphia, and other places in the area. I still need to write the text for this page. It'll probably be a while because we were there for a week, and my notes aren't in order.

Portland, OR - 10/02 - Still a very cool city. I'm currently working on the pictures for this trip.

Las Vegas, NV - 06/02 - The second enjoyable Vegas trip. It's not too exciting though.

Las Vegas, NV - 04/02 - My first enjoyable trip to Las Vegas.

Mardi Gras - 02/02 - My first time at Mardi Gras or New Orleans trip number five.

New Orleans, LA - 12/01 - New Orleans trip number four.

Portland, OR - 08/01 - One of the nicest and cleanest cities I've ever been to.

New Orleans, LA - 12/00 - New Orleans trip number three.

Europe (England, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany) - 07/99 - My first trip to Europe, and it was everything I thought it would be. I'll probably never put any photos up for this trip because they all have to be scanned, and I'm too lazy to do it.

Potential Travel

Who knows if and when these will ever happen.

Los Angeles, CA - Eating excellent ramen in L.A. just makes me want to return there to do it again.

Russian River Valley, CA - Mountains, trees, a river that flows into an ocean, wine, and fine dining. What's not to love?

Monterey, CA - I'd love to go to another Great Wine Escape and attend one or two of the wine maker dinners.

Portland, OR - Umm... I just like the place.

Birmingham, AL - It looks like a cleaner version of New Orleans.

Philadelphia, PA - I didn't get to spend nearly enough time in one of the most historic cities in the US the first time I was there.

Japan - For my next trip to Japan (once again delayed) it looks like Lynn will actually join me so we'll probably visit Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, and Tokyo if we ever manage to get there.

France - I didn't think I'd want to go back to France, but I've found I do. I'd like to take a road trip through Burgundy, Alsace, and Champagne finally spending a little time in Paris.

Switzerland, Germany, and Austria - I've been to them twice, but I always feel like I could spend more time there.

Northern Italy - I've never been to Italy, but I'd love to see Lugano, Switzerland; Venice; Florence; and Turin.

Bali - I'd go for the artwork and Lynn would go for the beaches. It'll probably be a long time before we make it to Bali.

China and Vietnam - These are trips of opportunity; the only way I'll go is if I have someone to go with and it's cheap enough.

Resources

Airfares

Southwest Airlines fare specials - One of the cheapest airlines, and the specials make things cheaper. Some people are bothered by the lack of assigned seating, but it doesn't bother me. If it cost me an extra $50 to know which seat is mine ahead of time I'd just as soon not know.

Farecast - Farecast could be potentially useful for finding lower domestic fares by predicting what they could be by what they were in the past.

Hotel Rooms

turbotrip.com - Turbotrip used to be much better than Expedia, but now they use Expedia so they might not be as useful as they used to be.

Quikbook - They look like they can get you some really good hotel deals.

Priceline.com - It's pretty good if you don't care where you stay. Every time I go to Tucson I book my hotel through Priceline. BiddingForTravel.com might be a useful primer for bidding on Priceline.

Information/Critique

Fodors - They seem to have an opinion on everything (much like someone else you may know). I like to look at their restaurant descriptions, but they also have hotel ratings and destination information for the entire world.

Eyewitness Travel Guides - Their selling point is "The guides that show you what the others only tell you". There are times when a picture is worth a thousand words and that's especially true when you're trying to decide where to visit. I wish other travel guides would realize how much nicer, and potentially useful, a full color travel guide is. If you don't believe me about its usefulness compare a black and white map to a color one; you don't need color to read a map, but it definitely helps.

National Geographic Traveler - Another full color travel guide. I like the Eyewitness travel guides better though because they usually cover the local foods and they have more maps.

Monster: Work Abroad/Articles - It's targeted to people who are going to work abroad, but there are some interesting articles on different cultures and other useful information for the casual traveler.

Region Specific

New Orleans
The New Orleans Menu by Tom Fitzmorris - Tom Fitzmorris is the only food critic I've ever read who knows food, writes well, and whose tastes and food philosophy are similar to mine. I don't think his ratings are that useful, but his reviews are very accurate. You have to be a member to read his current reviews, but you can read the older ones at neworleans.com.

Las Vegas
Larry's Las Vegas Restaurant Guide - I love getting one person's perspective on restaurants and this guy has eaten at more than a few in Vegas.

Europe
Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door - Rick Steves is the man and his site is full of useful information and the "Graffiti Wall" is fun to read through.

Vacation Packages/Tours

EF Tours - If you are looking for a no frills trip that's cheap, EF does that. I didn't enjoy my experience with them in Europe, but other people told me that it was atypical. If you do use them just remember that the dinner included in the cost of the tour sucks.

Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door - The tours are expensive, but I hear they're pretty good. I thought the city tour my wife and I went on was decent, but I'm not much of a tour person. My wife loved it though.

Personal History

Traveling has always been something I've loved to do. Whether it's going out of town to someplace different in Arizona, or traveling to another country, it's always a worthwhile experience. It's one of my favorite ways to spend money because I think the experience persists longer than material things. It also promotes learning and growth (although that really depends on the type of traveler you are).

I made traveling a priority a while ago, and I've actually been doing it a lot more. It's always nice when things work out as intended.
